On the first of March 50 students came together in Het Heerenhuis in Groningen to discuss global matters regarding the politics of Energy. In the morning an inspiring lecture was given by

Dr. J.S.A.M. van Koningsbrugge.
Dr. Hans van Koningsbrugge is since 1990 a professor at the RijksUniversiteit Groningen. He teaches history of Russia. Previously Mr. Van Koningsbrugge studied history and was employed by the University of Nijmegen. Two years after his appointment as a special professor at the State University for Culture of Moscow in 1998 he became director of the Netherlands-Russian Archives Centre (The NRAC). Moreover, since November 15th Van Koningsbrugge is active as a coordinator of research conducted by the Centre for Eastern and Central European Studies at the RijksUniversiteit Groningen and he is also enrolled in several researches on Russia at the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).Van Koningsbrugge is especially involved in research of modern Russia and Relations between the Netherlands and Russia.

Subsequently the several topics and the rules of procedure were introduced in the different councils.
Next, the first sessions started, in which the delegates negotiating skills, power to convince the other delegates and your casual knowledge were put to the test. Around noon, the delegates were able to can relax a little while enjoying lunch.

After lunch a second lecture was given by Msc. Herlmer Horlings
Helmer Horlings is a researcher at the Gasunie. He also joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) in January 2006 as natural gas analyst in the LTO Energy Diversification Division. Helmer started his career at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), where he was involved in the process development of biomass gasification. In 2003, Helmer started working for Gasunie where he worked on assignments ranging from typical engineering to business development. Helmer was involved in the early phase of the GATE LNG terminal development in the Rotterdam harbour and worked closely together with Gazprom subsidiaries on energy efficiency in Russia. Helmer holds a Master of Science in Bioprocess Engineering from the Wageningen Agricultural University and a Master of Technological Design in Process & Product Design from the Technical University of Eindhoven. Helmer is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

In the end of the day, during the informal drinks the delegates were able to restore their relations.

We can look back at a very successful day full of lively debates and interesting speeches. We are grateful for everyones enthousiastic participation and we hope to see you all this summer in The Hague participating at TEIMUN!
