I follow the same principles. I use Mail on OS X and installed a handy plugin that displays an unobtrusive and semi-transparent pop window when an e-mail arrives. It's called Mail.Appetizer - http://www.bronsonbeta.com/mailappetizer/ and I have found it to be indispensable. It gives me the chance to Respond or Delete immediately and I don't have to interrupt my workflow by keeping the e-mail client open. I use "Things" for my GTD, but I have not had much luck with it so far. My tasks come in too quickly and are completed before I have a chance to enter them into Things.
