To plan or not to plan
In the last couple of weeks I often received the question where I will be in my career in 5 years. As always my answer is “I don’t know”. This answer usually leads to the question “You must have thought about where you want to be in 5 years, right?” and my answer is “no”.
I never plan my life more than 6 months ahead, because life has taught me that in 6 months everything around you can change. Also not having a ‘masterplan’ has worked quite well for me, I can understand that for other people not having a clear goal or vision could cause stress, but the ambiguity of not deciding feels liberating to me.
Sometimes people view not having a clear plan as a lack of ambition. I think that not having a plan is a way to keep all options open and not limit myself to some goal I dreamt up years ago.
The weird thing is that I am quite precise about short term planning, there are only a few days in the next couple weeks where I don’t have something planned already. Every device I have has my agenda synced to it.
Trusting in my ability to ‘make the right decisions’ has worked for me so far, but I must admit I do wonder what could happen if I actually focus on something, the question remains focus on what?
